Presider of Holy Communion

Church Teaching

MKCCC and Calvary CCC teach that the elements used in Holy Communion (or “the Lord’s Supper”) are symbols of the body and blood of Christ. In eating the bread and drinking from the cup, a person obeys a command of Christ to recall His sacrifice for us, His presence with us and His certain return (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

Our two churches teach that the elements should be taken only by those who have been born again and baptised. Communicants ought to reflect upon their sin and Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for them prior to partaking with a reverent attitude (1 Corinthians 11:27-29).

Preferably, the pastor of a church should preside at Holy Communion. However, any member designated by the two churches could also do so. Each believer, and not just the one presiding, is invited to partake of the bread and the cup. A person’s participation ought to be voluntary and never forced.

To lessen the likelihood of transmitting illnesses, we insist upon using individual communion cups and, in the case of a using single chalice, intinction (dipping). Juice is favoured over wine to avoid causing anyone to stumble.

Standard Holy Communion Agenda

  1. Proclamation of God’s work of salvation (or some special aspect of it)
  2. Self-reflection of communicants
  3. Prayer of thanksgiving
  4. Assistants approach altar
  5. Words of Institution (an account of the Last Supper)
  6. Instructions on whom allowed to partake and how
  7. Distribution and partaking of elements
  8. Prayer of blessing (optional)

Responsibilities

  1. Check with the Service Leader for the worship agenda.
  2. Arrive at the worship venue at least 20 minutes before start time.
  3. Make sure the elements are sufficient and arranged appropriately prior to the service.
  4. Identify assistants (most likely the Greeters) prior to the service and provide instructions.
  5. Join the service team for briefing and prayer 15 minutes before start time.
  6. Sanitise hands prior to Holy Communion.
  7. Assist in putting away the communion ware.
